How it works

A five-day, 52-week year starts with 260 nominal workdays, and entered paid leave is removed before salary is divided by worked days and hours. Weekly and monthly pay still divide by 52 and 12 because paid holiday remains part of gross salary; 37.5 hours and 33 days are editable contract assumptions.

Formula
worked hours = (260 − paid leave days) × weekly hours ÷ 5
  • The hourly figure uses average day length equal to weekly hours divided by five.
  • The 33-day example can represent 25 contractual days plus 8 public holidays, not a universal entitlement.

Worked example

A 50,000 salary
37.5 hours a week with 25 days holiday and 8 bank holidays
Input
											Annual salary: 50000
Hours per week: 37.5

Output
												Hourly: 29.37

Working hours: 1702.5

When to use this

Employment-offer comparisons, payroll checks, and UK contract reviews use gross salary and contractual leave to compare salaried work with hourly or daily rates.

Edge cases

  • At 33 paid days off, the hourly rate uses 227 worked days while weekly and monthly gross pay remain salary divided by 52 and 12.
  • A zero-hour week is rejected because no hourly denominator exists.
  • Holiday above 200 days is rejected before it can reduce the fixed 260-day work year to an implausibly small denominator.
