How it works

Candidate words are compared by their stressed vowel and following phonemes using pronunciation data; exact rhyme requires the final stressed nucleus and coda to match, while slant modes relax one or more features. Spelling alone is insufficient because English orthography does not encode pronunciation consistently.

  • Phoneme matching distinguishes exact rhyme from visual similarity.
