How it works

Words are mapped to phoneme symbols using a pronunciation lexicon or grapheme-to-phoneme rules, then rendered with an IPA-compatible symbol set. The transcription represents a selected accent and can include stress, length, and syllable boundaries.

  • IPA symbols describe speech sounds independently of spelling, but dialect must be specified.

Worked example

Transcribing "cake time"
Two magic-e words, transcribed and spelled out letter by letter
Input
											cake time

Output
												Ipa: keɪk taɪm
Nato: Charlie Alpha Kilo Echo / Tango India Mike Echo
Word count: 2

When to use this

Dictionary checks, language lessons, and linguistics exercises transcribe pronunciation.

Edge cases

  • Read has different pronunciations in present and past contexts.
  • A proper name may be absent from the lexicon.
  • An accent change can alter vowels while spelling stays constant.
