How it works

Spool price is divided by spool weight to get cost per gram. Used grams are increased by the entered waste percentage, then multiplied by that unit cost and rounded for the displayed estimate.

  • Waste starts at zero because purge and failure rates vary.
  • Spool price and weight stay explicit for regional material costs.

Worked example

100g off a 20 spool, with a little purge waste
A 1kg spool bought for 20
Input
											Grams used: 100
Spool price: 20
Spool weight g: 1000
Waste percent: 5

Output
												Cost per gram: 0.02
Cost: 2
Waste grams: 5
Cost with waste: 2.1

When to use this

Print quotes, print-farm job costing, and hobby spool tracking use material estimates.

Edge cases

  • A 1 kg spool is 1000 g, not 1 g.
  • Waste is applied to used grams after the print amount is entered.
  • Machine time, electricity, and unentered failed prints are outside the estimate.
