How it works

Canonical URLs become urlset XML with optional metadata; URL count or size limits trigger multiple files and sitemap-index entries. URLs are escaped and ordered deterministically.

  • The protocol permits 50,000 URLs or 50 MB per file.
  • Splitting is required for larger sites.

Worked example

https://example.com/blog

Priority: 0.8
Lastmod:

Output
												<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/</loc>
    <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
    <priority>0.8</priority>
  </url>
  <url>
    <loc>https://example.com/about</loc>
    <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>

  </url>
</urlset>

When to use this

Static sites, catalogs, and SEO pipelines generate sitemaps.

Edge cases

  • Fragments should not become separate crawl targets.
  • Redirect URLs weaken sitemap signals.
  • More than 50,000 URLs needs an index.
