How it works

A sentence is tokenized and classified for clauses, punctuation, word count, and common readability signals; optional labels identify likely subject, verb, and modifiers. Heuristic parsing reports cues rather than a full syntactic tree.

  • Lightweight token analysis works offline but cannot resolve every attachment.

Worked example

Three sentences of mixed difficulty
A short simple sentence, a passive one, and a longer harder one
Input
The cat sat. The report was written by the committee. Notwithstanding the considerable administrative complexity, the organisation persevered.

Output
												1. "The cat sat." - 3 words, grade 0, active
2. "The report was written by the committee." - 7 words, grade 5.7, passive
3. "Notwithstanding the considerable administrative complexity, the organisation persevered." - 8 words, grade 28.8, active

When to use this

Language study, editing, and readability explanations analyze sentences.

Edge cases

  • Quoted punctuation may not mark the outer sentence boundary.
  • Coordination creates multiple verbs without making the sentence passive.
  • A fragment may be intentional in dialogue or headings.
