How it works

The lumen method multiplies target lux by square metres, then divides by utilisation and maintenance factors to account for light that does not reach the working plane or is lost over time. Dividing the installed-lumen requirement by one lamp's rated output and rounding up gives the lamp count.

Formula
installed lumens = area × target lux ÷ (utilisation factor × maintenance factor)
lamps = ceiling(installed lumens ÷ lumens per lamp)
  • Target lux, lamp lumens, utilisation, and maintenance have no universal defaults; they must come from the lighting brief, room calculation, maintenance plan, and product data.

Worked example

A 12 m² work area at 300 lux
Allow for 0.8 utilisation and maintenance factors with 800-lumen lamps

When to use this

Workshop layouts estimate installed flux, office schedules check working-plane illuminance, and maintenance plans allow for ageing and dirt.

Edge cases

  • A utilisation factor of 1 assumes every emitted lumen reaches the working plane.
  • An 800-lumen lamp value cannot replace a 300-lux target because flux and illuminance are different quantities.
  • The lumen method alone does not establish glare, uniformity, daylight, or emergency-lighting compliance.
