How it works

Text is normalized and compared against a configurable phrase list using exact, case-insensitive, or fuzzy matching; matched spans retain their positions so an editor can inspect context. Fuzzy thresholds control whether inflected or lightly altered phrases count.

  • A curated list is necessary because cliché judgments depend on genre and audience.

Worked example

Two well-known cliches in one sentence
Both phrases match the built-in list
Input
At the end of the day, it is what it is.

Output
"At the end of the day" - character 0
"it is what it is" - character 23

When to use this

Marketing drafts, writing workshops, and speech edits review stock expressions.

Edge cases

  • A phrase can be literal rather than figurative in context.
  • Fuzzy matching can flag an intentional quotation.
  • New clichés absent from the list will not be detected.
